HPA-Southampton Laboratory - Peter Hawtin

Dr Peter Hawtin is currently Interim Regional Microbiologist for the HPA South East Region and Deputy Director of the HPA South East Regional Laboratory at Southampton. His interest in gastrointestinal infection and outbreak detection and analysis is longstanding, originally working on the epidemiology of campylobacter infections, including the frequency and distribution of quinolone resistance, and also on Helicobacter with studies on the role of the urease enzyme and intrafamilial distribution of infection.

In 2000 he, in collaboration with Professors Peter Diggle (University of Lancaster), Sarah O’Brien (University of Manchester) and Dr Trevor Bryant (University of Southampton) worked on real time spatio-temporal statistical analysis of gastrointestinal disease. Latterly, Peter has worked on data capture and analysis methods within the health service for surveillance purposes.
