Dr Jim Gray trained in virology at the Regional Virus Laboratory, Edinburgh before moving to the Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory in Cambridge in 1978. He was awarded a PhD in 1985 for work on the diagnosis of herpesvirus infections in the immunocompromised. In Cambridge, he was Head of Molecular Diagnostic Microbiology and Head of the PHLS Human Papillomavirus Reference Laboratory and conducted grant funded research on the molecular epidemiology of gastroenteric viruses. In 2002, he was appointed to head the Enteric Virus Unit of the Virus Reference Department at the Centre for Infections, HPA, London. Current research interests include the molecular epidemiology of noroviruses, rotaviruses and enteroviruses and the mechanisms by which viruses generate diversity.
