HPA - West Midlands - Gillian Smith

Since 1998 Gillian has worked part-time as a Regional Epidemiologist at the Regional Surveillance Unit (Health Protection Agency, West Midlands). In addition to her Regional Epidemiologist role, she has a national remit for health protection surveillance in primary care for the HPA.

Working within a small primary care surveillance team Gillian particularly enjoys the ‘joint’ nature of their work – involving all Divisions of the HPA and primary care colleagues.

Some of the work of the IID2 study involves surveillance data from primary care, particularly NHS Direct, and it is for this reason she jointly inputs to the project with her colleague Ewan Gerard.
