Brian Smyth graduated from Queens University, Belfast in 1978. Part of his subsequent training was undertaken at the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre in London where he participated in the investigation of several national outbreaks of food poisoning. He was appointed Consultant in Communicable Disease Control to the Northern Health and Social Services Board in 1989. In March 1999 he was appointed Regional Epidemiologist to establish the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre for Northern Ireland [CDSC (NI)]. His special interests are zoonotic infection and travel health. He was a member of the Study Steering Group estimating the prevalence of IID in Ireland, North and South, through a telephone survey (2003). He is also a member of the FSA Epidemiology of Infection Group and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the all Ireland Food Safety Promotion Board.
